Piarom Date (piyarom): Semi-dried and the
coloring of this kind is dark brown and it has a unique
taste. The skin of piarom date is thin. The piarom
date has a kind of sugar which is acceptable for
diabetic people.
Kabkab Date: The coloring of this variety is black
and its taste is very delicious.
Mazafati Date: The coloring of this kind variety is
black and its taste is very delicious.
Types of dates
There are many types of date, but only some of them,
mentioned bellow, because their tastes compose the
major kinds.
History of date
Dates have been a staple food of the Middle East for
thousands of years. It is believed to have originated
around the Persian Gulf, and has been cultivated in
ancient times from Mesopotamia to prehistoric Egypt,
possibly as early as 6000 BC. There is archeological
evidence of cultivation in eastern Arabia in 4,000 BC.
In later times, Arabs spread dates around northern
Africa and into Spain, and dates were introduced into
California by the Spaniards in 1765, around Mission San
Ignacio.

Nutritional value of the date
100 grams of dried date has about 300 calories and is
composed of about 70% carbohydrates, 2.2% protein,
0.6% fat while fresh dates contain about 160 calories.

The uses of dates
Food uses: dates can be eaten plain or used for cooking in chopped form
for cakes, sweet, pudding, bread, ice cream, cereal, candy. Surplus date
is used in jam, jelly, juice, syrup, vinegar and alcohol.

Medicinal Uses:
The fruit, because of its tannin content, can be used medically as a
detersive and astringent for intestinal diseases. It can be used as
infusion, decoction, syrup or paste and is administered as a treatment
for sore throat, colds and bronchial catarrh. It is taken to relieve fever,
cystisis, gonorrhea, edema and liver and abdominal diseases. It is also
said to counteract alcohol intoxication.

one exporter of dates in recent years and Iranian
dates are exported to many countries.

DATE STANDARDS
In order to export, date producers in Iran must observe the following conditions which have been
arranged by institute of standard & industrial research of Iran.
• Without live vermin

• Maximum verminous date: 7%

• Maximum other kinds and forms: 2%

• Maximum crushed and damaged date: 3%

• Maximum percent of unripe date: 2%

• Maximum color variation date: 3%

• Maximum external material: 6%

• Maximum black and dark head: 9%
Note 1: These conditions relate to sayer kind and other kinds of date have a little different condition.
Note 2: Percentage of moisture in each kind is different from other kinds. For example moisture of sayer
and zahedi is about 16% to 18% but moisture of mazafati and kabkab is about 20% to 22%
